Plankton Study 2024
Recovery of BONGO net.
Science crew at their station on the aft deck.
Performed vertical plankton tows using calibrated nets to collect zooplankton samples across multiple depth intervals, supporting the assessment of species distribution, abundance, and seasonal variability. Assisted with the deployment and recovery of CTD instrumentation to obtain high-resolution water column profiles, including temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.
Job Description:
BONGO Plankton net ready for deployment.
Crew done for the day and RP secured for the night.
Benthic and Sediment Sampling
Preparing samples for processing on aft deck.
Recovery of the Van Veen by the captain himself!
We conduct benthic and sediment sampling using in-house designed and fabricated sampling equipment tailored to specific field conditions. This approach allows for flexible, cost-effective, and reliable collection of seabed and riverbed materials across a range of environments.
Job Description:
Midshipman rescued from the grab (he survived!).
Ponar grab on the Sea Dog.
Benthic sorting stations under A-frame.
Bute Inlet 2022
Approaching the field. During this project all fleet of SER were used.
Multibeam survey launch Sea Dog doing a crew transfer.
Job Description:
SER set up an acoustic study in Bute Inlet, BC using moored and vessel mounted acoustic arrays to study underwater landslides. The extent of resultant sediment transport was also studied using deep water sampling techniques.
Two-point ADCP mooring ready for deployment on aft deck. This two point anchor system was designed in-house.
Survey Launch Sea Dog outfitted with multibeam equipment.
RV Richardson Point in foggy morning.
Water Quality Sampling in Vancouver Harbour
Research Stuff Preparing CDT on Sea Dog. North Vancouver Dock.
Job Description:
Conducted water sampling operations in Vancouver Harbour using a dedicated survey launch Sea Dog equipped with a specialized winch system for deploying oceanographic instruments.
English Bay Anchorage.
Heavy Rain can’t stop our performance.
Acoustic Moorings 2025
Set up working station for deployment equipment by A - Frame.
Job Description:
Participated in the deployment, recovery, and maintenance of acoustic moorings in coastal environments, supporting long-term oceanographic and environmental monitoring programs in British Columbia.
Equipment stand by on aft deck.
Whales!
Lions Gate Programm 2021
Sediment sampling operations using a grab sampler, deployed from the vessel to collect seabed material for environmental analysis.
Onboard survey operations in Vancouver Harbour, supporting water quality and environmental monitoring activities.
Job Description:
In 2021, multiple groups—such as Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Port of Vancouver, and academic partners like the University of British Columbia—were involved in environmental monitoring and oceanographic research in the Burrard Inlet area near the Lions Gate Bridge. Seaward Engineering & Research also participated in this study, contributing to field operations and data collection efforts.
Survey team retrieving and processing sediment samples on deck following successful seabed collection.
In House Designed Grab sampler!
Processing.
Operating Crane for equipment deployment.
Data Collection Moorings
Mooring winch setup for acoustic mooring deployment.
High current ADCP moorings ready for deployment on aft deck.
Job Description:
Deployment and recovery of marine mammal monitoring acoustic moorings, ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) moorings, and biological monitoring moorings in coastal and harbour environments, including operations in Vancouver Harbour.
Successful deployment of mooring and communication surface buoy.
